The Coton de Tulear is a small, sturdy companion dog that originated on the island of Madagascar. It's specific origins are unknown, but it is a cheerful, faithful, intelligent and totally delightful member of the canine species whose temperament has been compared to that of a happy clown. It comes naturally in three colors: White, Tri-color, and Black & White, with the first being the most common color, and the last being the rarest.

Many wonderful things have been claimed for the Coton, and many of them are true, but it is a good idea to talk directly with a reputable breeder before jumping over the moon in enthusiasm. It is true that the Coton has no doggy odor and that a Coton is not a 'yappy' dog. Many people say that the Coton does not shed. This is strictly true; the Coton will not leave hair (which can grow to 5"-8" long) all over your furniture, floor and rugs. However, the coat does require a certain amount of maintenance, and when it is combed out on a weekly basis, a lot of hair will accumulate in the combs. People also say that the Coton is hypo-allergenic. It is true that the Coton has very little dander and the coat is more like hair than fur, and it is certainly true, to my own knowledge, that severe allergy sufferers have been able to tolerate Cotons where no other dog would do. Two puppies from Calli's first litter went to severe allergy homes and they both worked out. Does this mean that every Coton will work out with every allergy sufferer? Of course not; there can be no absolute guarantee. It is, however, certainly an avenue worth exploring, especially for people who have had no luck with other dogs in the past.
